Literacy PLUS recognizes that the homeless and near-homeless often are unable to get to the places where literacy programs are provided. These programs are frequently located in libraries, churches, or community centers. Unless these locations are close to homeless shelters and residence halls, homeless adults often have difficulties with accessing these literacy program sites. Literacy PLUS addresses this obstacle by partnering with Horizon House, a homeless day shelter that provides resources and support that adults need to end their homelessness.
By providing literacy services on-site, Literacy Plus can better meet the complex needs of the homeless. Literacy PLUS is currently working with Goodwill Industry, Partners In Housing, Horizon House, Gennesaret Health Recovery Program, and Wheeler Mission to increase reading skills of homeless adults so they can enroll in educational programs but currently are unable to handle the independent reading requirements. These homeless service providers offer the social services support for the learners, while Literacy PLUS addresses their educational needs. Combining these, services assist these adults to begin taking steps towards independence.
Literacy PLUS also recognizes that many literacy programs have volunteer tutors, but they often do not come from the same circumstances as the participants. The result is a gap in truly understanding the issues that a large percentage of low literacy adults face in their daily lives. Many Literacy PLUS tutors have experienced homelessness and are able to provide learners with more than literacy skills. They help learners increase their self-esteem, motivation, and self-confidence. Literacy PLUS also selects material that meets the needs of each individual learner.
